Stay Safe this Christmas Christmas is a time for festive cheer. It’s all about cooking up a feast, spending time with family and friends and decorating your home with fairy lights, candles and decorations. There’s always so much to think about and with so many distractions, it’s also a time to take extra care to keep your family and loved one safe from fire or accidents over the festive season. Here are a few tips for keeping you safe this Christmas: · Don’t overload sockets when putting up the Christmas lights and other devices needing electric, use one plug per socket. Always turn off plugs when they are not in use, except those that are designed to be left on, like freezers · Always use an RCD (residual current device) on outdoor electrical equipment. This safety device can save lives by instantly switching off the power if there is a fault and can be found in any DIY store · Never leave cooking unattended. Most house fires start in the kitchen so it's best to be mindful of this especially as such a busy time of year. Don’t cook after drinking alcohol and always turn off kitchen appliances when you have finished cooking · Never leave burning candles unattended. Keep candles out of children’s reach, and away from decorations, cards and wrapping paper, fires, lights and heaters · Put your cigarette out, right out. Make sure your cigarette is fully extinguished and take care when drinking alcohol or feeling tired. It’s very easy to fall asleep while your cigarette is still burning and set furniture alight · Ensure you have a working smoke alarm installed on every level of your home. A working alarm can give you the vital time needed to escape in a fire. Test your smoke alarms regularly and never remove batteries! · Protect your home. Don’t leave keys in back doors, double lock your front doors, set alarms if you have them and keep car keys securely out of sight when you are at home · Make sure that everyone in your home knows what to do if there is a fire in your home: get out, stay out and call 999 After all that – don’t forget to enjoy yourself during the Christmas season! From all at Golding Places.
